About Fitzroy Harbour

Fitzroy Harbour has a rich history dating to 1796 when it was established as a fur trading post. Charles Shirreff formally founded the village in 1831, and by 1866 it was a post village of 200 residents at the head of Duchesne Lake navigation, featuring a small bay dotted with islands.

The village was an important centre of the timber trade during the 19th century, with steamboats from Aylmer reaching Fitzroy Harbour but unable to pass the rapids farther west. The Chats Falls on the Ottawa River, once a natural waterfall, is now the site of a hydroelectric dam operated by Ontario Power Generation.

Fitzroy Township amalgamated with Huntley and Torbolton to form West Carleton in 1974, which became part of Ottawa in 2001. The Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre, built in 1977, provides recreation facilities including softball diamonds, soccer pitches, a playground, and outdoor rink.
