About Vanier
Vanier traces its roots to the 1820s, growing as a francophone community on the east bank of the Rideau River. The communities of Janeville, Clarkstown, and Clandeboye merged in 1909 to form Eastview, which was renamed Vanier in 1969 in honour of Governor General Georges Vanier. The city amalgamated into Ottawa in 2001.
The neighbourhood's housing stock reflects its working-class history, with modest homes from the early-to-mid 20th century. While historically francophone, Vanier has become one of Ottawa's most diverse neighbourhoods, home to significant Indigenous and newcomer populations.

Location & Boundaries
Vanier is bounded by Hemlock Avenue and Beechwood Avenue to the north, the Queensway (Highway 417) to the south, the Rideau River to the west (across from Lowertown and Sandy Hill), and St. Laurent Boulevard to the east. McArthur Avenue divides Vanier from Overbrook to the south.
