Contractors in Leitrim
Leitrim is a dispersed rural community in South Gloucester named after County Leitrim in Ireland, now encompassing the rapidly growing Findlay Creek suburban development. After decades of controversy over development impacts on the ecologically significant Leitrim Wetland, residential construction began in the 1990s and has accelerated dramatically, creating one of Ottawa's newest and fastest-growing communities.
About Leitrim
Leitrim's transformation from farmland to suburban community was decades in the making. Development discussions began in the 1980s but faced significant opposition due to concerns about the ecologically diverse Leitrim Wetland, home to wildlife, rare plants, and two-century-old trees.
The battle to protect the wetland included an Ontario Municipal Board hearing and Environmental Review Tribunal proceedings, dragging on for over a decade. In 1991, the provincial government altered the wetland boundary, removing one-fifth and opening it to development.
Today's Leitrim encompasses the rapidly growing Findlay Creek subdivision, one of Ottawa's newest communities. The area is also home to CFS Leitrim, Canada's oldest operational signal intelligence station established in 1941, and is near the Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Location & Boundaries
Leitrim is bounded by Leitrim Road to the north and Rideau Road to the south, generally between Bank Street to the east and Albion Road to the west. The Ottawa Neighbourhood Study defines boundaries as Johnston Road-Blohm Drive to the north and Hunt Club Road to the south.
