About Britannia

Britannia's history begins with Captain John LeBreton's 1818 estate, where he built a grist mill, sawmill, and house he called 'Britannia.' By the early 1900s, Britannia benefited from its location on Lac Deschênes across from Aylmer, Quebec, becoming a popular pleasure destination.

The Ottawa Electric Railway completed its streetcar line to Britannia Bay on January 13, 1900, bringing up to 6,000 visitors daily to enjoy a 1,000-foot pier, auditorium, bathing houses, and pavilions. A post office was established by 1875 to serve the growing community.

Britannia Village remained predominantly a summer cottage community until after WWII, when returning veterans sought affordable housing. The village was annexed to Ottawa in 1950 and was a separate municipal ward from 1973 to 1994. Today, Britannia Village's 610 residents enjoy its waterfront character, while surrounding areas offer diverse housing options.
