About Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill draws its name from a lighthouse that once stood in the Ottawa River, visible from the hilltop at Naskapi Drive. While the lighthouse is gone, its foundation remains visible from bike paths along the river. The Belden map of 1879 shows the lighthouse northeast of Duck Island, explaining the neighbourhood's distinctive name.

The area was part of the City of Gloucester until the 2001 amalgamation with Ottawa. Development in the 1960s and 1970s created a primarily residential neighbourhood that has maintained its family-oriented character.

Beacon Hill pioneered Ottawa's express bus service when the Beacon Hill North Community Association inaugurated the 'Beacon Hill Bullet' on July 5, 1971, becoming the prototype for express services across Ottawa suburbs. The community association, revived in 2009, continues to advocate for residents.

Beacon Hill North is bounded by the Ottawa River to the north, Montreal Road to the south, Green's Creek to the east, and Blair Road to the west. Beacon Hill South is bounded by Montreal Road to the north, the Queensway to the east/south, and Blair Road to the west.
