Metcalfe's history dates to 1827 when Colonel Archibald Macdonell became an early settler in the Osgoode Township area. Originally called Hawley's Corners, the village was renamed Metcalfe in 1877 in honour of Charles Theophilus Metcalfe, Governor General of Canada from 1843 to 1846.
By 1866, Metcalfe was a thriving post village with general stores, churches, and a grammar school, serving as a stop on the stagecoach route from Bytown (Ottawa) to Cornwall. The village has hosted the Metcalfe Fair each fall since 1856, making it one of the oldest continuously running agricultural fairs in the region.
Today, Metcalfe serves as a residential community while maintaining its agricultural heritage. The village offers recreational facilities including a golf course, baseball fields, tennis courts, and curling club, providing country living with community amenities.
