Contractors in Mechanicsville

Mechanicsville is a historic working-class neighbourhood in Kitchissippi Ward in central Ottawa, dating to at least 1879 when it housed workers from nearby mills and railyards. Located north of Scott Street and east of Parkdale Avenue, the neighbourhood features mostly 1900s-era wood-frame homes on grid streets, with newer highrise apartments along Parkdale Avenue.

About Mechanicsville

Mechanicsville's origins date to 1872 when Robert Sparks, P.L. Surveyor, prepared a subdivision plan for property owned by Mrs. T.M. Blasdel and A.H. Baldwin. The Village of Mechanicsville was part of Lot 36 Concession A of Nepean Township.

The neighbourhood evolved as a working-class area housing people employed at nearby mills and railyards, with the name Mechanicsville documented as early as 1879. The area developed with modest wood-frame homes on grid streets, typical of worker housing of the era.

In the 1970s and 1980s, expansion of Scott Street and development of the Transitway along the old rail line effectively separated Mechanicsville from areas south of Scott Street. Today, the neighbourhood retains its character of 1900s-era homes while newer highrise apartment buildings have developed along Parkdale Avenue.
