About Kars

Kars was originally named Wellington Village before being renamed in 1857 to avoid confusion with another Wellington settlement in Prince Edward County. The new name honoured the Turkish town of Kars for its valiant stand against Russian troops during the Crimean War.

By 1866, Kars was a post village of 200 residents in North Gower Township, located on the Rideau River near the Ottawa and Prescott Railway. The village had four general stores and a steam sawmill established by A.J. Eastman in 1852.

The Rideau River through Kars is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Rideau Canal. The village sits on the longest uninterrupted section between locks at Long Island (Manotick) and Burritts Rapids. Most residents now work in Ottawa, though the village maintains its rural character with Kars on the Rideau Public School serving the community.
