The neighbourhood was built primarily between 1950 and 1965, developing south of the former Gateville area after Gloucester's annexation by Ottawa in 1950. Divided by Heron Road, the neighbourhood encompasses the areas sometimes referred to as Billings Bridge and Clementine.
About Heron Park
Heron Park has deep historical connections to the Billings Bridge area, named after Bradish Billings, one of the first settlers. The original Farmers Bridge was built in 1830 and rebuilt in 1916, still standing today. During the Great Depression, part of this area was known as 'Poverty Hill' or 'Deadbeat's Hill.'
After Gloucester was annexed by Ottawa in 1950 and the Billings Bridge village was expropriated, the Heron Park community developed south of the former Gateville area. Most homes were built between 1950 and 1965, though the oldest home dates to 1930.
The neighbourhood includes several parks such as Heron Park, Kaladar Park, Bruce Timmermans Park, and Brookfield Park. The Sawmill Creek pathways provide recreational opportunities and connect to the broader city trail system.
Location & Boundaries
Heron Park is bounded by the Rideau River to the north, Sawmill Creek to the west, Bank Street to the east, and Walkley Road to the south. Heron Road divides the neighbourhood but it is considered one unified community.
